After over 25 years of scouting for locations for film directors and photographers including Patrick Demarchelier, Ang Lee, Peter Lindbergh, Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, and Steven Spielberg, I teamed up with award-winning photobook publisher Kerher Verlag to create a 128-page book showcasing 70 beautifully printed color photographs culled from my location scouting as well as my travel across five continents. It is called:
Locations from a Movie I Never Made
These seven words suggest both the endless flow of world pictures and the boundless human desire to stop time and find oneself therein. David Graham’s photographs are, on one hand, byproducts of his professional work as a location scout for film and advertising, and on the other hand, documentations of the mirage of social lives dominated by technology and media, The Metaverse, social media and all the AI conjured up with effortless prompts, allow each of us the gratification to perform on a stage of our own making.
(opening excerpt from an essay by fine arts historian Leah Modigliani)
The book made its official premiere at the famed photo festival Les Recontres d’Arles in France this July. Because of shipping rules and having a European publisher, the book will not be available in the US until late October. My Pre-Sales book launch event in New York City is Thursday, October 10th, 6p - 8p at The Ivory Peacok, 38 W 26th Street, NYC 10010, and look forward to seeing as many people who can make it.
Kehrer Verlag is among the world’s leading publishers of photo books. Based in Heidelberg, Germany, Kehrer Verlag has published acclaimed photographers such as Saul Leiter, Stephen Shore, Guido Guidi, Rinko Kawauchi, Nobuyoshi Araki, Helen Levitt, Allen Frame, Christopher Anderson, and also many emerging photographers like myself.
David Graham is one of the best location scouts in the business. But this book confirms my long-held suspicion that on any given film set, if you scratch beneath the surface of titles on a crew set, you just might find a visionary artist.” – Tony Goldwyn
